Erica Lee and Allison Claire were born on November 14, 1995 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Baystate Medical Center’s Wesson Women and Infants’ in Springfield, Massachusetts.
They were born fifteen weeks premature. A normal pregnancy is usually forty weeks. Erica weighed 1 lb. 5 oz. and Allison weighed 1 lb. 8 oz.. Being born this premature there were many complication. The most significant being their immature lungs. There just wasn’t enough air sacs to make the lungs effective. When the lungs aren’t effective no other organs can be.
On November 16, 1995 the doctors told us that there was nothing else that could be done and that they should be taken off life support. They were brought to us just as regular newborns would be, but instead of bringing them home, it was to spend the last few hours of their lives with us.
